John Vachon’s Street Photographs 1936-1943

Photos of The Great Depression

John Vachon photographed many rural areas assigned to him by the Farm Security Administration, but enjoyed photographing in his favorite haunts, America’s big cities. In my opinion this slide montage shows his most compelling images from the urban streets. One can see the influence of Paul Strand (strong shadows) and Walker Evans (torn billboards).
All photos are in the public domain and courtesy of the Library of Congress.
